Following reports that Bristol’s only independent councillor has defected to the Tories, Liberal Democrat councillor Tim Leaman has called for Jason Budd to resign.

Cllr Tim Leaman, who has represented Kingsweston ward since 2010, said:

“Being a representative of the same area of the city as Cllr Budd I am sure this will come as a surprise to many residents, especially those who voted for him when he stood on an independent ticket. Indeed many residents are already asking me why he isn’t stepping down and re-standing as a Tory in May. Unfortunately he does have a history of jumping ship to save his own skin.

“He has no electoral mandate for what he has done and I think he should be seriously considering his position. He should do the decent thing and resign, triggering a by-election to take place and allowing the people of Kingsweston ward to rightfully have their say. A by-election could be held on the same day as the general election on May 7th at minimal cost to the taxpayer.

“He was elected as an independent councillor, not as a Conservative councillor. The IfB website quotes him as saying he ‘stood for election because he wanted to represent the people in the ward and not a political party.’ To an outsider looking in, it would seem like the ‘independent’ bandwagon is in turmoil.

“If he really believes that serving local residents by joining a political party, after telling them that he would be an ‘independent community champion’, is the right thing to do and what residents want, then he should resign. By doing so he could then show the courage of his convictions by facing the electorate under the label of his new found love of the Conservative Party.”
